If you’ve read our previous journal entries, you’ll know that Hutch Houseplants began life back in 2017 in a desperate bid to avoid us (Frankie and Rob) having to return to the world of ‘proper work’. Frankie had spent the Summer peddling her terrariums at craft fairs and markets across the South West, and, in a diversion from our initial plan to open a pub, we decided to open up our shop on Paris St as a short term ‘pop up’ selling terrariums and houseplants.
What was intended to last 6 months is still here 4 years on and has gone from strength to strength. We’re busier than ever and feel lucky everyday that we get to come into ‘work’.
Looking back over the last 4 years, we can’t quite believe the journey that Hutch Houseplants has been on. We look back on pictures from 2017, (like those below) and struggle to take in how much space there was in the shop back then… a long way from the jungle of 2021!
2018 saw the first of our annual shop refits, the jungle got progressively fuller, Luna was welcomed into the family, we ran a whole host of fantastic workshops in store and capped the year off with our first stall at the Exeter Christmas Market.
In 2019 we really began to get our teeth into plant installations and design. We were incredibly proud of our stalls at the Devon County Show and RHS Rosemoor Flower Show in this year, we took a trip over to the Netherlands to meet with some our fantastic growers and suppliers, and of course, the shop had a refit!
In 2020, the COVID pandemic forced our business online and we spent a lot of time working with our friends over at Dirty Martini, to build a website that we are incredibly proud of. We now ship all over the UK and run deliveries locally. We of course, had another refit (for COVID reasons this time), worked with the brilliant John Lewis to get our workshops back up and running and enjoyed a busy year in store, when we were able to open!
Despite the uncertainty of 2020, 2021 has been a bumper year with far too much to mention here, the absolute highlight being our award winning display garden at the RHS Rosemoor Flower Show. We still pinch ourselves every day that we are RHS award winners!
The Hutch Houseplants family has grown over the years. We’re no longer just a duo, but have an amazing team that work with us everyday to make Hutch bigger and better than ever. We’re incredibly proud and grateful for the work that Sian, Lucie and Allie do for us.
We’ve got a LOT of big plans for 2022 which we cannot wait to share with you all. But for now, if you’ve read right to the end, we just want to say an enormous thank you to YOU and to every single person who has supported and shopped with us over the last 4 years. Your support means that we get to do what we love every single day and we truly are grateful for that. Here’s to the next 40 years of Hutch Houseplants!!
